Live Strong

WHERE: Mister Miller Coffee Co (formerly Michael’s Cafe Volare), 111 Pakington Street Geelong West

WHEN: Midday Saturday 17th May, 2014

WHY: To raise $5000 for cancer research**

HOW: http://vic.cancercouncilfundraising.org.au/shavethebeard

A new era for this Geelong institution! Fresh, new signage pays homage to local philanthropist and benfactor, Mr Alexander Miller.

What was once Michael’s Cafe Volare, has been re-branded Mister Miller Coffee Co.  Fresh, new signage pays homage to local philanthropist and benfactor, Mr Alexander Miller (a brief biography can be found here).  Mister Miller Coffee Co will play host to the “Shave the Beard” cancer research fundraiser to take place at midday on Saturday May 17th.

No doubt, many Geelong-based readers will be aware that our local caffeine dispenser, Stephen Nardi, is raising money for cancer research.  What many of you may not know is the reason why.

On the 17th of May 2004 Stephen had one of life’s biggest curve balls thrown right at him; that insidious “C” word.  You know; the one that, more often than not, shatters dreams and steals lives?  The sad reality is, we all know someone that has been afflicted by this disease.  But being the remarkable young man that he is, he didn’t stop and feel sorry for himself.   With the love and support of his close-knit family and friends, he picked the ball up and threw it right back in cancer’s face!

When you’re 17 and about to embark on your final year at school, the last thing you expect is to be diagnosed with cancer.  What started out as an annoying back pain was quickly found to be something far more sinister.  This type of cancer is unusual in someone so young, so three days after being diagnosed, he had surgery. After taking some time to recover from that, in July, began 3 rounds of chemotherapy.

Chemo might have killed the cancer, but not his spirit! Undeterred, he was determined to get back to school and finish year 12. He spoke about the importance of getting back to normality and with the support of the faculty and his mates at St. Josephs, he also organised his first cancer research fundraiser, which was a huge success!  He was invited to make a speech at the final assembly, which he summarised for me: appreciate your education and time at school, as you may not realise what it means until it is taken away from you…..a bit like life really.

In an excerpt taken from his donation page, Stephen puts it all into perspective:

“Although at the time it seemed life ending, at 17 years old, facing my last year of high school, it would become a realisation that I was and still am one of the lucky ones. Some families are not so lucky when it comes to dealing with this selfish disease. Overcoming this illness gave me an understanding of change and how to deal with it when life throws you curve balls.

“This small accomplishment is something I feel I need to do. The last 10 years of my life have had its ups and downs but this morning I wake up appreciative of the gift of life and today I am thankful to share it with you!”

To mark 10 years since his diagnosis and 12 months since Stephen started growing his beard (much to his mother’s chagrin!) he would like to invite everyone to come along and watch him shave it off!  So I guess the next question is; who will shave it off? Let’s put the call out to some of  Geelong’s public figures. Mr Mayor? Billy Brownless? Cameron Ling? Any other suggestions?

WHERE/HOW CAN YOU DONATE?  Stephen has set up a page with the Victorian Cancer Council so you can donate directly with them (see link at the top of this post), or you can donate at the window when you are buying your coffee.  He will also be donating $1 from every coffee sold on the day of the great shave.

CAN I JOIN IN ON THE DAY?  Absolutely; the more, the merrier! Just head down to Mister Miller (formerly Michael’s Cafe Volare) on Pakington Street prior to the day and speak to Stephen about participating.

**NOTE: At the time this post was published, he had already surpassed his $5000 target, with donations coming from as far away as Sweden, Canada & Ireland!  What do you say Geelong; let’s help him double that!

Boom Gallery

Where: 11 Rutland St, Newtown

When: Wed to Sat 9.30 – 4

Web: www.boomgallery.com.au

Yesterday, I needed to unchain myself from the stress of my workbench momentarily, to clear my head and have a change of scenery!

One of my favourite places to visit for a little bit of escapism is Boom Gallery.

For those of you that have been reading Oh! Hello Geelong since the early days, hold tight whilst I give our more recent followers a snapshot of Boom Gallery’s history…

Founders Kate Jacoby and Ren Inei have a passion for all things art and design.  Put simply; they are brilliant at what they do!

They have done both themselves and Geelong proud, by breathing new life and purpose into an old red brick warehouse, originally home to a wool mill that provided employment for returned service men.  Located in the industrial heart of Newtown just off Pakington Street, it sits perched, proudly, above the Barwon River. Since it’s opening in August 2011, Boom quickly established itself as Geelong’s premier contemporary art gallery and has continued to grow from strength to strength!

From the moment you walk through the door, their vision and respect for the integrity of the building’s industrial heritage is abundantly clear! The use of big bold light fixtures and recycled wood throughout the interior, has given way to a sleek, contemporary gallery/café/retail space!

August 2013 saw the launch of Big Boom; a celebration of their second birthday and the opening of the gallery space to include the adjacent warehouse; a perfect solution for the ever-growing cross section of work that includes painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, photography and small objects – all with a strong regional bias!

More recently, local chef Andy Pye (talented owner of the fabulous Rue ClerMarket – stay tuned for this delicious post!) has joined forces with Boom and is serving breakfast and a gallery lunch, 9.30 ‘til 4 Wed – Sat, featuring incredible local produce, bakery sweets and of course, Geelong’s very own Cartel Coffee.

So back to the escapism…

Yesterday, I was fortunate enough to catch the Merrang exhibition (it runs until the 30th November). This exhibition is a collection of works by 9 artists (Ben Fennessy, Pai De Bruyn, Jiri Tibor Novak, Gregory Day, Cricket Saleh, Glenn Romanis, Deb Fisher, Ren Inei and Natalie Anderson) that Boom Gallery took on a 3-day field trip to Merrang; a historic property of national significance, located in the heart of the Western District of Victoria.

It was a slow procession around the spaces, absorbing the diverse subject matter and media, but for me, the standout was an installation piece by Glenn Romanis. You need to see it in person to really appreciate the inspiration behind it!

Boom will be presenting their final two shows for 2013, both opening on Friday 6th December from 5.30pm – 8pm.

“Terrafirm” (until 1st February 2014) is an impressive body of work by Mackay-based Ngaio Lenz.  Over the past 10 years, she has had many solo shows in Queensland and Victoria, most recently at Flinders Lane Gallery & Hand Held Gallery in Melbourne and Umbrella Studio in Townsville.

Boom’s third annual Christmas Show (until 21st December) brings together seven diverse artists from Geelong and Melbourne and will focus on affordable, small format artworks – yay!  This year the participating artists are Shelley McKenzie, Steve Salo, Mark Cuthbertson, Elize Feely, Simon Benz, Sandra Eterovic and Idil Ersoy.

For a little more reading on Boom Gallery, please see our previous post from July 10, 2012.

For the full experience (trust me – you need to do this!) please visit them at 11 Rutland St, Newtown (Geelong), Victoria 3216.

Special thanks to Cricket Saleh & Boom Gallery for providing photos for this post!

Good Evening, and Welcome to Television…

Back in the 1950s we welcomed in the dawn of television. It was in black and white and we all thought it was incredibly exciting….

We are equally excited to announce that Geelong is getting it’s VERY OWN magazine show!  Forget Postcards, the new ‘Pulse Television’ will be highlighting and featuring the Greater Geelong region and its many hidden gems and we, yes, us two are on board presenting a segment most weeks uncovering what we love about Geelong.

So when does all this excitement happen you ask….the pilot episode of Pulse Television is going to air on Friday 6th September at 8pm on Channel 31. We can’t wait as we had so much fun filming our first adventure at the Hughes Street shopping centre where we interviewed the local traders about what they love about being a part of this colourful community. Not to mention us enjoying the tasty treats they have on offer.

So do you have a story to tell? Do you want to let Geelong know about something you are doing? Know a gem thats perfect to be uncovered and to gleam in the spotlight? Then get in touch and let us know. We are always looking for new and exciting things we can let our readers or should we say ‘watchers’ to know about. We think Geelong is a great place and we want everyone to know about it so we might be paying you a visit with a TV crew.

Put the date in your diary and join us for this new and exciting adventure.

A little more about the show –

The various segments will introduce our audience to the diversity of Geelong and its surrounding community, profiling its personalities, exploring local music talent, dabbling in the arts, highlighting different cultures and taking part in local festivals. Expect to see live music, local artists, local food and wine, community gardens, refugee stories, Geelong personalities and more – all developed, filmed and edited by our youth media students training at The Pulse and presented by volunteers from the station and the wider community.

The new show is intending to cater for the wider adult community, from teens and young adults to baby boomers. Specifically, it will be targeting open and creative minds interested in diversity, arts and culture.

Liz Carr, Executive Producer says, ‘Channel 31 want Geelong content, and that’s exactly what they will get. I think once the people of Geelong see the show, they will all want to be a part of it and get involved. Join us once a week where we will take you on a tour of the Geelong region and all it has to offer”.

94.7 The Pulse FM is the heartbeat of the greater Geelong community, broadcasting over 70 programs per week. Pulse Television captures the essence of the station and its partner Diversitat, the largest Multicultural Communities’ Council in Australia.

The series will run in accordance with Channel 31 thirteen-week seasons with an expected 13 episodes produced per season.

Thank you to Christine Morrissy of Morrissy Photos for taking the location shots.
