Oh! Hello Geelong is a little bit obsessed with the quirky, at times outrageous and super clever world of Japanese design. So discovering the work of Fiona McPherson and Miyo Fallshaw and their exciting kids clothing label Oishi-m, we were giddy with sake-like delight! Miyo tells us that the name Oishi-m is inspired by the Japanese word oishi (which means yummy) and the “m” represents the mini person in your life – aw, so sweet! With an original, fun and quality range of clothes and accessories for little ones (with a Japanese twist), we’re pretty sure that little ones wearing Oishi-m will stand out from the pack! The Oishi-m range is available from their flagship store in Torquay, online or through any of their stockists across Australia! To Miyo (who answered our fun little Q&A) – arigato gozaimasu!!!

Please tell us a bit about you/your store and what inspired you to focus on this particular market…

Oishi-m began life as a beautiful excuse to buy fabrics we loved whilst making quirky, on-trend clothing that didn’t compromise fit or comfort. We started out focusing on creating ranges to stock in other stores and on our own website. It wasn’t until we outgrew our dining room tables and a shared office that the idea of having our own retail store became a reality. Our shop concept grew a little life of its own and became a shopping list of all the cute and stylish things we’ve seen from across Australian and those items that we wished we were sold closer to home! We always wanted to keep our store simple, fresh and quirky. Somewhere that adults can wish they were little again.

Can you tell us a little about your baby/kids/mum range?

We make delightful, limited edition garments for skinny minis and chubba bubbas. Designed in Torquay and made in Melbourne we’re a Victorian affair. Our garments infuse a range of fabrics including quirky Japanese fabrics with denim and cotton. But where we really stand out is that the fit and fabrication is incredibly comfortable and adaptable for growth. Our plan is to reshape the children’s wear market one tiny pair of jeans at a time! We’ve been really chuffed with the reception of our limited edition collections!

Name your top three baby/kids products for 2012…

Oishi-m Jeans – Biased but true. Our jeans feature; a super comfy, tummy toastie waist band (think stretchy maternity jeans); extra long legs so munchkins can wear them rolled up to begin then roll them down as they grow; and they’re designed to fit nappy bottoms to make them flaunt the huge toosh rather than hide it.

Native Shoes – Coming in some playful colours, these little shoes are as comfortable and soft as crocs but are way cooler. Awesome for playing at the beach and falling into ponds, even after super muddy play, Natives can be hosed off and back on for more adventures.

Milk and Soda Sunnies – there’s nothing quite so cool as a pair of Babiators, these tiny little aviators that are to die for.

What is THE perfect gift for a baby girl/baby boy?

La De Dah Kids hand rattles (choose from a fox, mouse, or even a monkey), which are designed by the wonderful Rebecca Dean from La De Dah Kids. I’ve managed to have several of them hover between car, handbag and living room play mat.

What are the spring/summer trends for boys/girls?

We seem to work off crazy Japanese trends rather than traditional Australian trends, so we would say the coming trends are; strong pinks, yellows and peach oranges for girls and classic red, navy, green and textural checks for boys.

Thanks Miyo! xx

Who: GOOSE

Where: 91 Garden Street, East Geelong, 3219

When: Mon – Fri 10 to 6 & Sat 10 to 5

Phone: 5229 5611

Web: www.goosestore.com.au

It’s no secret, Oh! Hello Geelong spends lots of time at GOOSE in East Geelong browsing through all the beautiful clothing, accessories and treasures for grown-ups! Yet during every visit (almost without fail) Oh! Hello Geelong ends up gravitating over to GOOSE’S collection of sweet things for little ones. Classic wooden toys, party dresses, arts and crafts, soft toys and cute as a button outfits for tiny tots fill the shelves – oh to be a little one again! Some our favourite brands you can find at goose are: Minti, Little Horn, Claesens, Seedling, Tutu Du Monde, Walnut shoes, Bla bla Kids, Littlephant prints and More for Boys. Huge thanks to our good friend Kristen Paul for taking time out of her ridiculously busy schedule to answer a few quick questions for Oh! Hello Little Ones!

Please tell us a bit about you/your store and what inspired you to focus on this particular market…

Years ago East Geelong was an area where grandparents lived (including my own), over the 16 years GOOSE has been in the suburb we have seen a rather dynamic swing to the new demographic of enthusiastic young home renovators, which has naturally evolved into the explosion of young families now living within a short stroll from the store.

Can you tell us a little about your baby/kids/mum range?

GOOSE continues to evolve and introduced children’s wear and other gift lines to dress and indulge little ones about 10 years ago. We have fashion to fit a newborn up to size 6 for boys and size 8 for girls. This range began to increase more when I became a mum (Kristen has 3 adorable girls aged 9, 6 ¾ and 2!). We cater for the individual dresser : we only bring in a small quantity of each size and style in our kids fashion ranges so that outfits you put together are uniquely yours (or your little one’s). Patterns and prints reign supreme as well as colour, colour and more colour.

Name you top three baby/kids products for 2012…

Ah this is a hard one! My mind races . . . the little booties by Love Luck & Wonder (which I have coming back into store VERY soon, as they have completely sold out in store), our selection of blabla toys and the Brio train set . . . one of which I’m happily offering as our little Oh! Hello Little Ones giveaway!

What is THE perfect gift for a baby girl/baby boy?

We have a beautiful selection of newborn and baby clothes that come in an endless choice of styles. Also, you’ll never go wrong with a classic wooden toy or soft toys (and GOOSE has lots to choose from). I’d have to say, I always love giving a gift that will be enjoyed when they are a little older; a book, a little outfit or an heirloom toy (something they’ll keep for there own).

What are your secrets for making pregnancy that little bit more lovely?

You may not feel your best everyday, so be kind and treat yourself with a quick pick me up. Something as simple as a long bath, a manicure, having your hair done or on the more accessorising slant, a new necklace or scarf!

What makes a nursery look really special?

Each of my little girls was a complete surprise, I come from a family of 3 boys and me! I’ve always gone for off-white walls and neutral tones with accessories : of course with a splash of colour, usually red. One of the little projects I’ve made to add a little extra personality to the nursery has been a handmade vintage inspired mobile. And as an extra special touch, I’ve always added one or a small grouping of my own (now classed as vintage!) toys to the room. I also suggest a collection of kids books, with great bold fun covers and designs. Make it a little room with eye candy that you’ll enjoy and don’t forget to invest in a comfy (+ stylish) chair to perch upon during the many hours you will spend in the nursery admiring the view!

Can you tell us about your range of children’s toys?

We carry classic wooden toys, including Bajo toys and Brio products. We have an explosion of toy options about to arrive in time for the Christmas season including puzzles, blocks, a range of green toys made out of recycled bottles, and a selection of Seedling’s ‘pocket money’ collection (this range is aimed at offering some fun quirky products that you can purchase with your spare change or pocket money  but can also be perfect Christmas stocking fillers).

It’s coming up to Christmas time, do you have a range of party clothes for little ones?

We have just received the new collection of tutu du monde dresses, they are absolutely divine and would make the perfect little Christmas outfit! We also have lots of other pretty options, including a selection of Megan Park’s summer collection with her signature floral paneling and embroidery.

Thanks Kristen! xx
